San Diego Colocation Server - Onsite Power

Power systems feed every operation in a San Diego colocation facility, from Internet carriers to cooling to individual servers. Both San Diego colocation server facilities have power systems, which focus on the following elements: connections to the public utilities, transfer switches, UPSs and generators. The San Diego colocation server centers don’t rely on public utilities or run UPSs waiting for power to come back. Power systems control even the Internet connections, so continuous power is vital to network uptime.

  • Direct feeds to utilities for 4000AMP, 480V power
  • Paralyzing redundant UPSs, meaning that all UPSs are in an n+1 redundant configuration so that one UPS failure doesn’t overload the remaining units; the load is distributed among the remaining UPSs so there is never an outage or break in power
  • Redundant master and emergency system buses
  • Redundant power distribution units and remote power panels, monitored at the circuit breaker for early overload warnings
  • Dual transfer switches

Tech Center Data Center: West San Diego Colocation

  • An onsite power plant, producing 2,400AMP and 48V
  • Automatic switching between two onsite, independent transformers
  • Multiple UPSs, totaling 2 megawatts
  • A 2 megawatt, onsite generator with 3,500 gallons of fuel

Lightwave Data Center: East San Diego Colocation

  • Multiple UPSs, totaling 2.5 megawatts
  • Two 1.5 megawatt, onsite generators with 10,000 gallons of fuel
  • Redundant connections to independent, offsite substations
  • Onsite power of 13 megawatts

Why this matters to your business...
San Diego colocation power systems feed everything from Internet backbone carriers to customer servers. Blackouts or brownouts can take the entire network offline, and even damage hardware. It’s not enough to depend on a public utility; a colocation facility has to provide uninterrupted power. Using a UPS for backup power is completely insufficient because UPSs are not intended to run for more than a few hours. Both of AIS’s San Diego colocation server facilities have redundant connections to independent public utilities, UPSs, transfer switches, and generators and fuel – with practiced failover procedure to move seamlessly from public energy – so that there is always power to both San Diego colo server facilities’ Internet carriers as well as to customer servers. Dependable power increases uptime.
